Once a woman, on a road

With but one end in sight

Raised her eyes to take in mine

Amid the falling night.

And in her auburn eyes, ablaze

Amid the embers glowing

A hope that seared the falling night

And left an empty knowing.

And in her eyes of bay, a sea

And ‘mid the current, flowing

Faith that fathomed falling night

And left a darkness glowing.

And when the billow ‘gulfed the blaze

Amid the dark descending –

And when the flame, it breached the sea

Soul’s light to eyes ascending –

I saw no more the woman rare

But an end now out of sight

And lowered my eyes to the lonely road

Amid the rising light.
